• Stop the source. Sink and toilet supply valves are under or behind the fixture; the water heater has its own valve on the cold line; the main is at the street or in the meter box by the sidewalk. If you cannot find it, a plumber or the utility can shut it at the meter.
• Cut power to the wet rooms at the breaker panel. If the panel itself is in water, do not touch it; leave it and say so when you call.
• Photograph and video everything before moving anything: the water, the source, floors, walls, furniture, and the ceiling if water came from above.
• Get things off the floor and open cabinet doors under wet counters. Do not use a household vacuum on standing water.
• Call your insurer to open the claim and note the number. Then call the line. Your policy expects you to mitigate now, not after the adjuster.
• Run the air conditioning; it is the largest dehumidifier in the house.

What the contractor does on the first visit

Confirms the source is stopped, classifies the water (clean, gray, or black), and extracts standing water. Pulls what cannot be dried in place: wet carpet pad, saturated baseboards, drywall that has wicked water, insulation. Sets air movers and dehumidifiers sized to the space, takes moisture readings on every affected surface, and photographs all of it. That log, from day one, is what your insurer will ask for.

Drying usually runs three to five days with daily readings. The contractor invoices you for the work; whether your insurer reimburses is between you and them.
